Tactile Sensing for Automation -  Recap of RoboBusiness 2024

RoboBusiness 2024 in Santa Clara marked an important step for XELA Robotics as we aimed to expand our reach in the U.S. market. While we have participated in events here before, this event gave us the chance to connect with a broader audience and gain valuable insights into the evolving needs of the robotics industry in this region.

Exploring New Opportunities

At the exhibition, we engaged with companies ranging from industry leaders to emerging innovators. These conversations deepened our understanding of how tactile sensing technology can address various applications.

We also attracted interest from American investors keen on the role of our sensors in automating warehousing and assembly line operations. Key processes like pick-and-place tasks, delicate handling, and precision assembly benefit from the ability to detect slip and apply the right force, all areas where our technology excels.

In automated picking systems, for example, precision is crucial. Robots handling diverse objects — whether fragile or irregularly shaped — must maintain a stable grip to prevent damage. This is becoming increasingly important as e-commerce and logistics demand more efficient, error-free fulfilment. Our uSkin sensors allow robots to dynamically adjust grip strength, ensuring consistent performance.

In assembly line environments, where speed and accuracy are critical, tactile feedback enables enhanced control during delicate tasks such as positioning sensitive electronics or assembling complex automotive components. The ability to adjust grip in real-time ensures robots can meet the demands of high-volume production without sacrificing quality.

Showcasing Tactile Sensing in Action

At our booth, live demonstrations connected these ideas to real-world applications in warehousing and assembly line automation. We showed how integrating uSkin sensors with various robotic hands and grippers improves precision and adaptability.

Our slip detection demo with the ROBOTIQ 2F-140 illustrated how tactile sensors help robots maintain a secure grip on delicate or irregular objects—key to automated picking processes. As robots increasingly take on these tasks, slip detection ensures that goods are handled safely, reducing costly errors.

The force calibration demo with the uSPa 44 showcased how tactile feedback ensures the right force is applied in assembly lines, essential for handling delicate components. This precision is vital for maintaining both speed and accuracy in high-output environments like electronics and automotive manufacturing.

Looking Ahead to RoboDex 2025

RoboBusiness 2024 provided valuable connections and the evolving needs of the robotics industry in this region. We are excited to carry this momentum into our next major event: RoboDex 2025 at Tokyo Big Sight this coming January.

This year, we will feature an exciting demo that highlights our latest advancements—combining the precision of our tactile sensors fully integrated into a robot arm. This demonstration will provide a hands-on experience, allowing attendees to see how our technology improves robotic performance in real-world scenarios.

Stay tuned for more updates as we gear up for RoboDex 2025!
